Schmuckmuseum (Jewellery Museum)

The Schmuckmuseum in the Reuchlinhaus is the most important jewellery museum in Europe and the reason most travellers stop in Pforzheim. The collection spans 5,000 years — Egyptian gold, Greek and Etruscan work, Renaissance brooches, art nouveau, Bauhaus, and a strong contemporary section.

The Reuchlinhaus itself is a 1961 modernist building by Manfred Lehmbruck, set in a quiet park. The displays are well lit and uncrowded; allow at least 90 minutes. Entry around €5; closed Mondays.

A story
The museum's collection includes the personal jewellery of the actress Liz Kingsley and the dancer Anna Pavlova, but also a 2,000-year-old Etruscan granulation necklace whose technique was lost for over a millennium and only rediscovered in Pforzheim's own workshops in the 19th century.
