Wallberg Memorial

The Wallberg is the cleared rubble of Pforzheim's destroyed centre, piled up on the southern edge of the inner city and gradually replanted with trees and footpaths. A path winds to a viewing terrace at the top, marked by a memorial cross that names the date of the raid and the dead.

It is a sobering site to walk to from the centre — 20 minutes through reconstructed streets followed by the climb itself. The view back over the city makes plain what was lost and what was rebuilt.

A story
The 35-metre Wallberg hill is not a natural rise but a mountain of rubble — the bulldozed remains of central Pforzheim after the February 1945 firestorm killed around 17,600 people in 22 minutes, more than the bombing of Coventry, Dresden in proportion to population. A cross at the top is the city's main memorial.
