Schonwald lies within the network of cross-country ski trails that makes the central Black Forest one of the better Nordic skiing destinations in Germany. The village is connected to a broader trail system that extends through the surrounding forest, with prepared tracks when snow conditions allow — typically from December through February, though the season varies considerably from year to year.
The trails around Schonwald are predominantly classic Nordic style but some sections support skating technique. The elevation at around 1,000 metres means snow holds longer here than in the valley towns below; in a good year the village sees reliable snow from January onwards. The forest setting is peaceful and the trails are well maintained by the local municipality.
In summer, the same forest paths serve walkers and mountain bikers. The Naturpark Südschwarzwald has marked the trails clearly, and the tourist office in the village can provide trail maps. For downhill skiing, the nearest significant ski area is the Feldberg (around 50 kilometres south), but Schonwald has limited downhill terrain of its own.
Information: The Schonwald tourist office (Kur- und Bäderverwaltung) can advise on current trail conditions during winter.
