Schonwald im Schwarzwald

High Black Forest spa village surrounded by central Schwarzwald walking and ski trails.

Schonwald im Schwarzwald is a small Black Forest village perched at around 1,000 metres elevation in the Schwarzwald-Baar district of Baden-Württemberg, about 12 kilometres north of Furtwangen and 40 kilometres southeast of Offenburg. It has the status of a Kneipp-Kurort (a designated health resort), which means the village has invested in a specific infrastructure of wellness and spa facilities around the therapeutic principles developed by Sebastian Kneipp in the 19th century.

The village sits at the heart of the central Black Forest, surrounded by the mixed conifer and beech forest that defines the region. In winter this means cross-country ski trails through the forest and, when conditions permit, some downhill skiing on the slopes above the village. In summer the same trails serve walkers and mountain bikers, and the altitude keeps temperatures noticeably cooler than the Rhine plain below.

The Blindensee, a small raised bog lake about 2.5 kilometres north of the village centre, is one of the more interesting natural features in the immediate area — an unusual type of formation in the Black Forest. The Triberg Waterfalls, Germany's highest waterfalls, are only about 6 kilometres to the east and make for an easy day excursion. Furtwangen, with its excellent German Clock Museum (Deutsches Uhrenmuseum), is a short drive south.

In winter, the village's cross-country ski trails connect into a broader network through the surrounding forest, and the elevated position guarantees more reliable snow than the valley towns below. Schonwald is essentially a village for people who want forest air, spa facilities, and quiet — not a destination with major independent sights. It works well as a base for exploring the central Black Forest at a slower pace than the tourist trails around Triberg.
