Chapel of Grace

The Chapel of Grace, or Gnadenkapelle, is the reason Altötting exists as a pilgrimage town. The small octagonal chapel stands in the middle of Kapellplatz and holds the Black Madonna, a dark wooden statue of Mary and the Christ Child dressed in embroidered robes.

The building is modest from the outside, but the interior is dense with centuries of devotion. Silver offerings, votive plaques, and the steady movement of pilgrims make it feel less like a museum piece than a living shrine.

A story
The chapel became a major pilgrimage site after two reported healing miracles in 1489. Its walls are covered with votive tablets, crutches, military medals, and small painted thanks from people who believed they had been helped here. Several Bavarian rulers had their hearts buried in silver urns nearby, a very literal sign of devotion to the shrine.
