St. Gumbertus is the principal church of Ansbach and one of the most important in Franconia. The building dates from the 15th century, though it incorporates elements from an earlier Romanesque structure. The interior is outstanding: a late Gothic choir of exceptional quality, with slender pillars and star-vaulted ceilings, and the Swan Knight Chapel (Schwanenritterkapelle), which contains the armour and tombs of the Brandenburg-Ansbach Margraves of the House of Hohenzollern.
The church has a dual character — the older Gothic sections feel meditative and cool, while the nave was remodelled in the baroque period to match the surrounding court architecture. The organ is one of the finest baroque instruments in the region. The church is freely accessible during opening hours.
