St. Johannis

St. Johannis is the second major church of Ansbach, standing near the old town market square and serving as the main Lutheran parish church. Its tower is a prominent landmark visible from across the town. The interior is simpler than the adjacent St. Gumbertus but contains good carved wooden furnishings and a calm, well-lit nave that repays a few minutes' quiet attention.

The church is closely linked to the Gymnasium Carolinum next door — both were founded in the early 16th century as part of the Reformation's educational project in the margraviate. Together they form one of the most coherent examples of early Protestant institution-building in southern Germany.
