Stadtplatz is Burghausen's long, elegant main square, stretched between the Salzach river and the castle cliff. Its pastel townhouses, arcades and narrow side lanes give the lower town a distinctly Inn-Salzach look: more Austrian borderland than postcard Bavaria.
This is the natural place to pause between the castle and the river. Cafes spill out in warm weather, stairways climb towards the castle ridge, and the views up to the walls are constant. It is prettiest early in the morning, before delivery vans and day-trippers take over the space.
