Erlangen is on the main rail line between Nuremberg and Bamberg, making it one of the most accessible smaller cities in Bavaria. Trains run several times an hour from Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof; the journey takes about 20 minutes. From Munich, the ICE to Nuremberg continues through Erlangen to Bamberg — Erlangen is roughly 1 hour 30 minutes from Munich by fast train.
There is no commercial airport in Erlangen. Nuremberg Airport is the most convenient, about 20 kilometres south by road or by combining S-Bahn to the city and then changing to the mainline train to Erlangen.
