The Schloss is the centrepiece of the Baroque planned town at the heart of Erlangen. Built at the beginning of the 18th century as a margravial residence, it sits at the head of the Schlossgarten — a long, formal park that runs northward from the building through the centre of the city.
The exterior is a handsome, restrained Baroque facade in the Franconian style. The building is now part of the Friedrich-Alexander University and not generally open to visitors, but the Schlossgarten behind it is always accessible and makes for a pleasant walk. In summer the park hosts concerts and events.
