Stadtmuseum Erlangen

The Stadtmuseum tells the story of Erlangen from the Huguenot settlement in 1686 through the industrial age and the university's development into a major research centre. It occupies a historic building near the city centre and holds collections of local art, craft, and historical documents.

The museum is worth an hour for context on what makes Erlangen distinctive among German cities — particularly the Huguenot founding story and the 18th-century planned town, which explain why the Altstadt looks so different from the rest of Franconia.
