Forggensee

A turquoise 15-square-kilometre artificial lake that stretches north of Füssen, formed in 1954 by damming the Lech river. The lake is at full pool only between June and October — in winter it is drained and looks like a wide muddy gorge. During the summer season it is a popular destination for swimming (cold), boating, windsurfing, and cycling around the 32 km lakeshore path.

The Forggensee passenger boat runs lake circuits from mid-May to mid-October, departing from Füssen harbour and from Schwangau. Sit on the right-hand side outbound for the best view of Neuschwanstein rising over the southern shore. A two-hour round trip is around €14. The lake's south-eastern corner is the closest point of the trail to the castles, allowing a good day combining boat, hike, and castle visit.
