Danube Waterfront

The Danube flows along the southern edge of Ingolstadt, and the riverfront promenade offers the best walking in the city — flat, tree-lined, with views across the river to the green south bank. In summer the waterfront fills with families, cyclists, and Sunday walkers. Several beer gardens occupy prime positions along the promenade.

The walk from the old town bridges eastward takes about 45 minutes at leisure, passing through parkland and past the historic fortifications that still line parts of the bank. The Baggersee lakes, formed from former gravel extraction pits, are popular swimming spots in summer — a short bike ride from the centre along the river path.

A story
Ingolstadt sat on the Danube's north bank for centuries as a strategically vital crossing point — the city was heavily fortified from the medieval period precisely because the river made it defensible and economically significant. The city suffered severe bombing in 1945 during Allied raids targeting the nearby oil refineries, but the waterfront district survived better than some inland areas.
