Auer Dult

A traditional open-air fair on Mariahilfplatz in Au, held three times a year (Maidult, Jakobidult, and Kirchweihdult), combining a fairground with a large market for antiques, secondhand kitchenware, pottery, and bric-a-brac. Munich residents take it seriously as a source of cheap crockery, old books, vintage objects, and the occasional genuine antique.

The atmosphere is genuinely festive without the overwhelming scale of Oktoberfest. The flea market section is the most rewarding — vendors lay out mixed lots from house clearances, and patient browsing sometimes produces finds. The food stalls serve traditional Bavarian fair food. Worth timing a Munich visit around if you're interested in markets.

A story
The Auer Dult runs three times a year — in late April/early May, late July, and late October — each for nine days. It's been held continuously since 1796, minus the war years. The antiques and secondhand goods market is the real draw; the fairground rides are for the kids.
