Wiener Platz Market

A traditional outdoor market in the heart of Haidhausen, a few streets east of the Isar, running Monday through Saturday. Unlike the more famous Viktualienmarkt, Wiener Platz retains a strongly local character — it's primarily a grocery market for the neighbourhood rather than a tourist destination, though visitors are welcome.

The surrounding neighbourhood has some of Munich's best independent cafes, wine bars, and restaurants — the streets around Kirchenstrasse and Franziskanerstrasse are worth exploring for dinner. The Haidhausen neighbourhood generally has a more relaxed, less showy character than Schwabing, with a younger crowd and lower prices.

A story
Wiener Platz is the neighbourhood market that the Viktualienmarkt used to be before it became famous — a working market with regular stalls selling cheese, bread, vegetables, and meat to the people who live in Haidhausen. Come on a weekday morning and you'll see the neighbourhood's demographics clearly: Turkish, Greek, and Vietnamese families alongside young families who moved in when the area gentrified in the 1990s.
