Café im Fuggerhaus

The café occupying part of the ground floor of the Fuggerhaus is the obvious place to stop on the Reichsstraße. The building itself — a 16th-century trading house commissioned by the Augsburg Fugger banking family at the height of their power — is worth a look regardless, with its arcaded courtyard and the kind of civic confidence that serious money produced in Renaissance Bavaria. The café inside is low-key and doesn't lean on the setting as hard as it could.

Coffee is good, the cake selection follows the Bavarian bakery calendar (Zwetschgendatschi in late summer, Strudel year-round), and the terrace on the street side gives you a front-row view of the Reichsstraße without having to walk anywhere. It fills with locals at mid-morning and again at mid-afternoon, which is usually a reliable indicator.

Opening hours follow Bavarian café norms — open from around nine, closed mid-evening — and it is shut on Mondays like much of the town.
