Gasthof Zum Schwarzen Adler

The Black Eagle is one of the older Gasthöfe on the Reichsstraße and the kind of place where the menu does not need to try anything clever: Schweinsbraten with Semmelknödel, Tafelspitz, Forelle from the local rivers when it is available. The dining room is low-ceilinged and wood-panelled, the beer is local and well kept, and the kitchen is run by people who have been cooking these dishes for a long time.

Lunch here on a weekday runs to a manageable fixed menu that represents good value by the standards of the Romantic Road circuit — the tourist premium that inflates prices in Rothenburg or Füssen has not fully arrived in Donauwörth. Evening service is unhurried in the way of provincial Gasthöfe everywhere, which is either relaxing or frustrating depending on your schedule.

The terrace at the rear has a view down toward the Danube that is worth knowing about in warm weather.
