Romanesque Cloister

Tucked beside the Stiftskirche, the Romanesque cloister of the former Benedictine abbey is the prettiest single corner of Feuchtwangen — short, weathered sandstone arcades on stocky columns enclosing a small courtyard. The carved capitals are the original 12th-century work and worth a careful look.

In summer the cloister becomes an open-air theatre: the Kreuzgangspiele festival runs every year from late May to mid-August with a programme of plays, musicals, and concerts. The setting is genuinely magical at dusk; book tickets in advance for the best seats.

A story
The cloister is the oldest part of the abbey complex — its squat sandstone arcades and short, sturdy columns date back to the 12th century. According to legend the abbey itself was founded by Charlemagne after he heard a dove drinking from a well in the forest here and took it as a divine sign.
