Burg Brattenstein

Hilltop castle above the town, now an open-air theatre venue

The castle sits on a low ridge directly above town, reached by a short path that climbs through the vineyards. The medieval defensive structure is mostly intact — walls, keep, gatehouse — and the courtyard inside is now used as a summer open-air theatre, which is the main reason most visitors come up.

Even outside festival season the climb is worthwhile for the view down over the red-tiled rooftops, the church, and the river bend. Free to enter the grounds outside performance times.

A story
Burg Brattenstein has watched over Röttingen since the 12th century, when the local lords of Hohenlohe built it to control the Tauber valley. The keep, walls, and tower still stand; the inner courtyard has been turned into an open-air theatre that hosts the town's summer festival every July and August. Climbing up at dusk for a play, with the lit-up half-timbered houses below and the vines on the slope opposite, is the way to see Röttingen at its best.
