Röttingen

Small Tauber valley wine town with intact medieval walls at the start of the Romantic Road

Röttingen bills itself as the first town on the Romantic Road, and it is a charming introduction. This small wine village in the Tauber valley still has its medieval city walls largely intact, and the centre is a pleasant jumble of half-timbered houses around a baroque town hall. Above them, Burg Brattenstein looks down from the ridge and turns into an open-air theatre every summer.

The town is surrounded by vineyards — Tauberfranken wines are less well known than those from the Rhine or Mosel, but the local Müller-Thurgau and Silvaner are worth trying. Röttingen also has a series of sundials scattered through its streets, part of an open-air sundial trail that makes for an unusual walk.

Day Trips

The Tauber valley has two unmissable neighbours within easy reach. Weikersheim, 15 km north, has one of the finest Renaissance palaces in southern Germany with a baroque garden. Bad Mergentheim, a little further on, has the Teutonic Knights' castle and a famous spa park. Both make a half-day trip from Röttingen with a car.

Things to Do

Röttingen is small enough that an hour's wander covers the highlights. The medieval walls, Burg Brattenstein, the baroque town hall, and the famous sundial trail are all within a couple of streets of each other. Outside town, the vineyards climb the slope above the Tauber and reward the short walk up with one of the best views of the Romantic Road's opening act.
