Röttingen's medieval defences are one of the most complete examples in the region. The wall runs almost the entire perimeter of the old town and still has most of its towers and gates standing — including the lower gate on the river side, which frames the approach into town from the Tauber bridge.
You can walk most of the circuit at street level in about 20 minutes. The walls were built in stages between the 13th and 15th centuries and were never breached, partly because the town never sat on a militarily important route.
