Max-Josefs-Platz is the main square of Rosenheim's old town, surrounded by colourful arcaded buildings (Laubenhäuser) that are characteristic of the Inn Valley architectural tradition. The square is pedestrianised and lined with cafes, shops, and the town hall. It is the natural starting point for a walk through the historic centre.
The arcaded ground floors — deep covered walkways running along the facades — are a practical response to the Bavarian climate as much as an aesthetic choice, and give the square a distinctive character different from most German market squares. The statue in the centre depicts Maximilian I Joseph, King of Bavaria. On weekday mornings a small farmers' market occupies part of the square.
