Traunstein's compact old town is the main draw — the Stadtplatz (market square) retains its medieval proportions despite the town's near-total destruction by fire in 1851, and St. Oswald's church at one end anchors the square with a Romanesque-Gothic tower. The Hofbräuhaus brewery, founded in 1612 and still brewing in the town centre, is a tangible piece of Bavarian brewing history. Day trips to the Chiemsee and into the Chiemgau Alps are easy by car.
