Neuzelle Abbey is outside Eisenhüttenstadt, but close enough to make the best add-on to a day here. The former Cistercian monastery is one of northern Germany's strongest Baroque church complexes, with a level of ornament that feels almost imported into this flat borderland.
The contrast is the pleasure: socialist planned city in the morning, Counter-Reformation theatre in stucco and paint in the afternoon. Trains and buses make it possible, though a car keeps the day simpler.
