The Grienericksee is the lake on which Rheinsberg sits, and the best view of Schloss Rheinsberg is from the water — the palace and its reflection framed by willows and the wooded shoreline. Boat rental is available in town, and canoes and kayaks can be hired to explore the connected waterway system of the Ruppiner Seenland, which links dozens of lakes through a network of canals and rivers. Swimming from the lake's shore is popular in summer.
Tucholsky asked to have his ashes scattered here, and the lake retains a quality of quiet beauty that makes the request easy to understand. A lakeside walk from the town centre passes a small beach and loops around to the park behind the palace.
