The western inner suburb, an independent town until 1937 and still distinctly its own place. The waterfront from the Fischmarkt down to the Övelgönne beach has the best Elbe views in the city, and the Ottensen quarter inland is full of cafes, small theatres and second-hand shops in old factory buildings. Altona's mainline station is the western terminus for many ICE long-distance trains and a useful starting point.
