Herkules

The Herkules is the city's symbol — a 70-metre pyramidal monument crowning the top of the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, built between 1701 and 1717 by the elector Karl von Hessen-Kassel. The colossal copper statue of Hercules at the summit, leaning on his club, points eastward across the Fulda valley.

You can climb the spiral stair inside the substructure to the viewing platform beneath the statue's feet. The view stretches across Kassel, the surrounding forest, and on clear days to the Brocken in the Harz Mountains. The Wasserspiele cascade runs from the base of the monument down the hillside — start your park visit here on a water-features day and walk down with the water.

A story
The Herkules figure on the top is a copy of the Farnese Hercules in Naples, scaled up to eight metres and hammered out of copper sheets. Visitors can climb a spiral stair inside the pyramid to a platform between the statue's legs — the best view in Kassel, and a slightly surreal one.
