Riedsee bei Leeheim

The Riedsee is a gravel-pit lake near the village of Leeheim, in the northwest of the Riedstadt municipal area. Like many such lakes in the Rhine plain, it was formed through gravel extraction and has since been colonised by aquatic vegetation and wildlife. The lake and its surrounds are a designated nature area, and the combination of open water, reedy margins, and adjacent grassland makes it a reliable birdwatching spot, particularly for waders and waterfowl during migration.

In summer the lake is popular with local swimmers and walkers. It is quieter and less developed than the Rhine-side beaches further south, which makes it more appealing if you want undisturbed time by the water. The flat landscape of the Ried stretches in every direction, giving the sky a presence that feels almost coastal. The lake is easily reached by bicycle from the Leeheim village and connects with routes toward the Kuhkopf-Knoblochsaue reserve to the south.
