Buttermarkt is the second of the four old market squares and was the dairy market until the early 20th century. It is now a residential square ringed by half-timbered houses, with the Stadthof Sankt Trinitatis — the old Trinity town hall building — on one side. A short flight of stone steps connects it to the higher level of the Eisenmarkt.
The square is unspectacular compared to the Eisenmarkt but has more of a residential, lived-in feel and is worth the short detour for the architecture.
