Eisenmarkt

One of the four old market squares, named for the iron trade

Wetzlar's medieval centre is built around four small squares, each named for the goods once sold there: Eisenmarkt (iron), Buttermarkt (butter), Fischmarkt (fish), and Kornmarkt (corn). Of the four, Eisenmarkt is the prettiest — a wedge of cobbles ringed by half-timbered houses, leading directly to the cathedral. It served as the meeting point for the local iron and forge trade through the late Middle Ages and into the early modern period, when iron was the main industry of the Lahn-Dill region.

Today it is the social centre of the Altstadt — a few cafés, the Du junges Mädchen fountain in the middle, and a good spot to sit and look up at the cathedral towers.
