Wetzlarer Garbenheimer Goethebrunnen

The country well in Garbenheim where Werther sat — a short walk out of town

In the village of Garbenheim, just east of Wetzlar across the Lahn, sits the small stone-walled well that Goethe described in the second letter of Werther: "I have found this dear little place outside the town, a half-hour's walk... where I sit by an old well and watch the village girls coming with their pitchers." The Garbenheim well was real and is still there, with a small bench and a plaque from the 19th-century Werther pilgrims.

It is the easiest of the Werther sites to walk to — a 40-minute path from the Altstadt along the Lahn and through fields. For literary tourists this is the genuine article; for everyone else it is a pleasant short walk to a village pub on the way back.
