Probably the most unusual institution in Wetzlar, the Phantastische Bibliothek was founded in 1989 and now holds more than 280,000 volumes of fantasy, science fiction, horror, fairy tales, and utopian literature — by some way the largest specialist collection of its kind in Europe and one of the largest in the world.
Anyone can use the reading room, and there is a small free exhibition area on the ground floor. The library also runs writers' residencies and consultations for German publishers and game studios. If genre fiction is your thing, it is reason enough to visit Wetzlar on its own.
