Gebr. Stern GmbH Giant Cuckoo Clock

The giant cuckoo clock on Marktstraße is one of Wiesbaden's small, charming oddities — a black-and-white mechanical clock on the facade of the Stern Brothers' jewellery shop, with a wooden cuckoo that emerges on the half hour to greet whoever happens to be passing. The clock has been working since 1946 and remains one of the largest of its kind in Germany.

Visitors gather underneath at quarter past and quarter to the hour, holding up phones to film the bird's brief appearance. The shop below sells watches and jewellery and is open during business hours; the clock itself runs from morning to evening, even on Sundays.

A story
When the Gebr. Stern jewellery shop installed its giant cuckoo clock on Marktstraße in 1946, it was the largest cuckoo clock in the world — a record it held until the 1970s. Every half hour from 9am to 9pm a wooden bird emerges from a window above the shop, leans out, and gives a long, dignified cuckoo.
