The Altstadtmarkt is the second great medieval square of Braunschweig, five minutes' walk west of Burgplatz, and in some ways more visually coherent — a wide rectangular space framed by the Gothic Altstadtrathaus (Old Town Hall) on one side and the 14th-century Martinikirche on the other.
The town hall is particularly fine: a long Gothic arcade with pointed arches at street level and a blind arcade of tracery above, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries in stages. On the square itself, a 19th-century bronze fountain commemorates Till Eulenspiegel, the folkloric trickster whose legend is associated with Braunschweig. The square hosts the Christmas market in December and a weekly farmers' market in the warmer months. The Magniviertel quarter, the best-preserved medieval street grid in the city, begins immediately behind the town hall.
