Baltrum's north beach is the island's main reason for being. It stretches the full length of the island — about five kilometres — and at low tide is impressively broad, with firm sand that makes walking easy and a gradual entry into the sea that works well for families. The water is cold even in summer (rarely above 18°C), but the shallow profile makes it safer than many North Sea beaches.
The beach is backed by dunes and entirely undeveloped: no beach bars, no rental huts, nothing except a few dune paths between the village and the sand. Seabirds — oystercatchers, terns, and dunlins — work the tideline. In the evenings the light off the North Sea is extraordinary.
