Electric Lighthouse

Small 19th-century electric lighthouse on Borkum, an unusual relic of early powered navigation lights.

Borkum's Electric Lighthouse is easy to miss beside the island's larger beacon, but it has a neat place in maritime history. Built as a small powered navigation light, it belongs to the era when coastal safety was shifting from oil and fire to electricity and engineered signalling.

The tower is a quick stop rather than a major attraction, but it fits naturally into a lighthouse walk around Borkum. Combine it with the Old Lighthouse, the New Lighthouse, and the sea marks to understand how the island announced itself to ships crossing the Ems estuary and the North Sea.
