Großes Kaap

Borkum’s large historic sea mark, a brick navigation landmark above the dunes

The Großes Kaap is one of Borkum's old sea marks, built to help ships identify the island before modern electronic navigation. Its stark brick geometry makes it stand out from the low dunes and resort streets, and it belongs to the same maritime landscape as Borkum's lighthouses and beach promenades.

There is not a long visit here: the value is in walking to it, seeing how it lines up with the island's exposed North Sea setting, and understanding that Borkum was read from the water long before it was marketed as a holiday island. It is a good short add-on to the North Beach or lighthouse circuit.
