Mönchehaus Museum

Twentieth- and twenty-first-century art in a sixteenth-century timbered house — home of the Kaiserring prize.

A 1528 half-timbered house tucked into the quiet lanes north of the market square, now home to Goslar's surprising museum of modern and contemporary art. The collection grew up around the Kaiserring, an art prize awarded by the town since 1975, and the catalogue of past winners is more or less a register of the postwar art establishment.

Inside, the contrast between the timber-framed rooms with leaded windows and the works on display is one of the points of the visit. A Sigmar Polke or a Marina Abramović in a sixteenth-century parlour is the kind of jolt that does not quite happen anywhere else in Germany. The sculpture garden behind the building is small but worth a circuit before you leave.

A story
Since 1975 Goslar has awarded an annual Kaiserring (Emperor's Ring) to a major contemporary artist, modelled on the medieval imperial gifts. The first ring went to Henry Moore; later recipients include Joseph Beuys, Anish Kapoor, Marlene Dumas, and Cindy Sherman. The award show is held in the Mönchehaus and a work by the winner enters the permanent collection — which is why a small Lower Saxon town owns a Beuys felt suit and an Anselm Kiefer lead book.
