Town Walls and Gates

A loop of medieval bastions, gates, and water defences around the old town.

Goslar's medieval circuit walls survive in stretches all around the old town, complete with several of the original gate towers and bastions. The most photogenic is the Breites Tor on the eastern side, a stone gatehouse straddling a wide moat fed by the Gose, with a small brewery and tavern occupying the upper floors. The Domvorhalle, the Achtermann tower, and the Zwinger are connected by a marked walking route that loops the whole town in about an hour.

The water side is worth noticing. Goslar built a network of artificial canals — the Abzucht and the Gose — that powered mills, supplied the brewers, and flushed mining waste downstream. Several of the channels are still visible at street level, especially around the Kahnteich pond at the foot of the Kaiserpfalz.
