Markthalle

The Markthalle is a covered market hall near the Marktplatz where local producers sell directly: cheese from Westphalian dairies, bread from regional bakers, cured meats, smoked fish, seasonal vegetables, and prepared dishes for eating on the spot. It is a working market rather than a food hall aimed at visitors, which keeps the prices reasonable and the quality honest.

The best time to come is late morning on a weekday, when the stalls are fully stocked and the lunch trade has not yet arrived. A meal put together from a few different stalls — some Schinken, a piece of dark bread, a few slices of aged cheese — costs very little and gives a more accurate picture of what the region actually eats than any restaurant menu. It closes early afternoon, so plan accordingly.
