Eldena Abbey

Cistercian abbey ruins made famous by Caspar David Friedrich's Romantic paintings.

Eldena Abbey is the sight that gives Greifswald its Romantic charge. The Cistercian ruins stand in a quiet park east of the centre, their Brick Gothic walls open to sky and trees. Caspar David Friedrich painted and sketched the abbey repeatedly, turning the ruin into a symbol of northern melancholy. It is best reached as part of a walk or bike ride along the Ryck.
