LVR Industrial Museum

Part of the Ruhr's industrial heritage network, in a former ironworks in central Oberhausen

The LVR Industrial Museum's Oberhausen branch occupies the St. Antony ironworks site — one of the oldest iron-smelting operations in the Ruhr, dating back to 1758. The museum is part of a network of industrial heritage sites across North Rhine-Westphalia administered by the Landschaftsverband Rheinland, and it covers the social and technical history of iron and steel production in the region.

The building itself is the exhibit as much as its contents: the preserved machinery, the furnace halls, and the workers' housing around the site tell the story of how industrial labour actually worked in 19th-century Germany. It's less spectacular than the Gasometer but more historically substantive — a serious museum that takes the human cost and achievement of industrialisation seriously.
