Hohenstein Park

The central forest of Witten, the Hohenstein sits on sandstone bluffs above the Ruhr River and offers the best views in the city: you can see the river valley and the surrounding hills in both directions from several vantage points on the bluff. The park is largely forested, criss-crossed with walking paths, and has a small wildlife enclosure (Wildgehege) with deer, wild boar, and other regional animals — popular with families.

The Hohenstein connects via riverside paths to the wider RuhrtalRadweg cycling network, making it an easy starting point for a longer ride along the river valley. In summer the meadows below the bluffs fill with Witten residents picnicking and cycling; in autumn the beech forest turns a deep amber that rivals anything the Ruhr has to offer.
