Schlossberg Caves

Large man-made red sandstone cave system below Hohenburg Castle.

The Schlossberg Caves are Homburg's standout sight: a large system of man-made chambers and tunnels cut into red sandstone below the castle hill. They were quarried for sand used in glassmaking and industry, leaving behind high, oddly shaped underground rooms.

Tours take you into the cooler lower world beneath the Schlossberg. Bring a layer even in warm weather, and pair the visit with the castle ruins above.
