Homburg

Saarland town with sandstone caves, castle ruins, Roman remains, and wooded ponds.

Homburg is an industrial Saarland town with a surprisingly good day of sights hidden around its edges. Its centre is useful and workaday, but above it are the Schlossberg Caves, a strange underground system cut into red sandstone, and the ruined Hohenburg Castle on the hill.

The second strong anchor is history farther out in Schwarzenacker, where the Roman Museum reconstructs part of a Gallo-Roman settlement. Add the ponds and woodland around Jaegersburg, and Homburg becomes more than a rail stop between Saarbruecken and Kaiserslautern.

It is best visited with a car or as a regional rail stop with a plan. The caves and castle are the priority; the Roman museum makes the day feel rounded.
