The Holy Cross Church Museum holds Zittau's great treasure: the Large Zittau Lenten Cloth of 1472. The huge painted textile once screened the altar during Lent and shows ninety biblical scenes, a rare survival of a medieval church practice that mostly vanished elsewhere.
It is the one sight in Zittau that feels genuinely exceptional. Even travellers who normally skip church art should give it time, because the scale and survival of the cloth are the point.
