Bunkerstollen Unterland takes you into the tunnel system below Heligoland's lower town. The displays cover the island as a naval fortress, forced labour, air raids, civilian shelter, and the difficult return after the war.
It is the best counterweight to the bright island scenery. Heligoland is beautiful, but its cliffs and harbour were also military infrastructure, and the bunker makes that history hard to miss.
