Unteres Schloss (Lower Castle)

The Lower Castle is the second residence of the Reuss family, built down in the old town when the cramped Upper Castle stopped being comfortable enough to live in. The present complex is largely 18th and 19th century, with a long four-winged plan around two courtyards.

Today it houses parts of the district administration and is not generally open to visitors, but the exterior — and especially the corner facing the market square — is the most prominent building in the lower town.
