Fuchsturm stands on the Hausberg east of Jena, the surviving tower of a medieval castle complex that once watched the Saale valley. From town it is a proper little climb rather than a casual stroll, which is exactly the point: the tower gives Jena one of its classic views, with the city folded between limestone hills.
The walk up passes through forest and open slopes, so it works well as a half-day escape from the university streets. At the top there is a restaurant and a terrace atmosphere on good-weather days, but the real reason to come is the old stone tower and the sense of how tightly Jena is held by its landscape.
