Nietzsche-Haus

Childhood home of Friedrich Nietzsche, now a small museum

Friedrich Nietzsche spent his adolescent years in Naumburg, arriving as a child in 1850 after his father's death and staying until he left for university at Bonn in 1864. The family home on Weingarten, now the Nietzsche-Haus, operates as a small museum covering his life and works, with particular attention to his formative years in the town. After his mental collapse in 1889, Nietzsche returned to Naumburg and lived with his mother and sister Elisabeth until 1897, when Elisabeth moved him to Weimar. He died in Weimar in 1900.

The museum is modest in scale but thoughtfully arranged, with original documents, photographs, and editions of his works. For those with more than a passing interest in Nietzsche, a visit alongside the cathedral makes Naumburg a surprisingly significant stop on any German itinerary.
